How we verify
Solar Price Atlas is compiled from public records, not from who paid to be listed.
Sources
- Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory — Tracking the Sun (2024 edition) — Installed price and characteristics of grid-connected distributed solar in the United States, compiled from state agencies, utilities and other programs; installs through 2023.
- OEDI data lake — Tracking the Sun parquet files — The public copy of the data set in the Department of Energy's Open Energy Data Initiative, which we downloaded.
We use LBNL's Tracking the Sun 2024 edition for eight states with named installers and reported prices: California, Arizona, New York, Massachusetts, Texas, Connecticut, New Mexico and Wisconsin. We keep customer-owned residential systems of 1 to 25 kW with a reported total installed price, installed from 2019 to 2023, excluding self-installed systems and third-party-owned systems (their price field is not a purchase price). Price per watt is the total price divided by the DC size in watts; we drop values outside $0.80 to $12 per watt as likely errors.
We group systems by installer name (case, punctuation and company suffixes ignored) and list installers with at least 15 such systems in a state. We show the installer's median, the 25th to 75th percentile range, the median system size, the install count and the latest install year, and compare the median with the state's median for the same systems. We state differences as percentages and percentiles only and do not label any installer expensive or cheap.
The data has no phone numbers or addresses, so each installer is placed under the town where it reported the most installs. Reporting varies by state and program, installer names can appear in several forms, and some installs may be missing. Prices are before incentives and the data ends in 2023. Check any installer's license with your state before you sign.
What a badge means
Appears in LBNL data: the installer has at least 15 customer-owned residential systems with a reported price, installed 2019 to 2023, in LBNL's Tracking the Sun 2024 edition. This shows that the installer reported installs; it does not verify licensing, insurance or quality. We only publish positive matches. A listing without a badge is not an accusation — most gaps are name variations between registries.
Freshness
Data was last refreshed on 2026-10-02. LBNL publishes a new edition about once a year; we update when it does.
